HCF FOOD CARE: HOW IT BEGAN

HCF_FoodBank_2021.jpg

This is a ministry that has been on our hearts for some time now.  On a Sunday morning in the summer of 2019 a prophetic word was released stating that food would be poured out – starting now. And within a minute, the doors of the church opened and box after box of a variety of food was brought in made available to the congregation.  Our people shared food with others in their buildings, and in a very short time people were lining up outside the church hoping for food to get them through the week.  Obviously there was a need!

Out of that experience came an understanding that there was a need in our community, and God put it on our hearts to help.  Since then we’ve assisted with the distribution of food in a low-income apartment building, and with some of the needs in our congregation, working towards the establishment of a full food bank.

We’re partnered with Second Harvest/Food Rescue, a national not-for-profit organization that co-ordinates food donations with distribution organizations.  We’ve been steadily building that flow of food to the needy in Strathcona (and beyond), and we’re applying for grants to establish the infrastructure we need to grow this ministry.
